Pushkar : India is famous for its pilgrimages (religious places) normally called "Tirth" in Local parlance Pushkar heads the religious itinerary and is called "Tirthraj" meaning king of all Religious places. As per Hindu mythology Lord Brahma "the Creator" wanted to perform a yagna and to decide the most auspicious place a Swan was released with a lotus flower in its mouth, the place the flower was dropped and The same was earmarked for yagna named Pushkar, which now has a lake with 5 famous temples and 52 Ghats (Bathing Places). Pushkar is a sacred place for Hindus, situated 11 kms. to the North-West of Ajmer. The charm of this sleepy, lakeside settlement so captivated the great Indian poet, Kalidas, that it found a place in his classic, Abhigyan Sakuntalam. Pushkar is one of five important pilgrimage centers of Hindus, where a lake sprung into being. Brahma is supposed to have performed yagna at this lake on Kartik Purnima (the full moon day of the Kartik - (November) month, hallowing the place. Sacred to Brahma, Pushkar boasts of its temple dedicated to him, which is the only one of its kind in the world. Pushkar Fair The annual Pushkar Fair is an experience that will make for a magical and an unforgettable sojourn to Rajasthan. Every year thousands of devotees throng the lake around the full moon day of Kartik Purnima in October-November to take a holy dip in the lake. Besides this their is another attraction of a cattle fair which is also organized by Tourism Department (Govt. of Rajasthan) wherein hundreds of villagers bring their horses, camels, bulls, cows etc. for sell and buy. In this fair the rural fair also participate along with foreign tourists in various games and other activities like tug of war , races of animals etc. Annual pushkar fair becomes hub of cultural activity, people of all castes wearing their traditional dresses come from all over Rajasthan to enjoy and take part in this holy fair.
